CANADA RESTORES ELIGIBLE FIELDS OF STUDY FOR POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMITS
On July 4, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a reversal of its June 25 decision to remove certain fields of study from eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. The restored Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes are once again considered eligible, and the updated list will remain in effect until the next scheduled review in early 2026.
The decision provides relief and clarity for international students affected by the sudden policy shift. IRCC confirmed that students who submitted study permit applications between June 25 and July 4 in the now-reinstated fields will continue to meet the program eligibility criteria upon graduation. This ensures that their pathway to gaining Canadian work experience remains open.
The eligible fields of study are aligned with occupations experiencing long-term labour shortages across Canada. IRCC emphasized that these CIP codes are subject to change based on future labour market assessments, highlighting the program’s role in supporting Canada’s economic goals and talent needs.
The PGWP program is a key element of Canada's immigration system, allowing international graduates to gain valuable Canadian work experience, which can strengthen their applications for permanent residency through programs like Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.
This update reflects IRCC’s ongoing effort to balance educational opportunities for international students with Canada’s labour market demands.
