NOVA SCOTIA'S PICTOU COUNTY UNVEILED PRIORITY SECTORS FOR THE RURAL IMMIGRATION PATHWAY IN 2025
Pictou County, Nova Scotia, has taken a proactive step in shaping the future of rural immigration by officially launching its priority sectors and occupations under the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) for 2025. This announcement marks a pivotal development in Canada's efforts to strengthen rural economies and attract global talent to less populated regions.
Located approximately two hours from Halifax, Pictou County includes several communities, such as Pictou Landing First Nation, New Glasgow, and Stellarton, and is known for its rich cultural heritage and close-knit population. The RCIP aims to respond directly to the region’s labour market needs by offering a streamlined pathway to permanent residence for foreign workers in in-demand occupations.
The county has identified five key sectors as immigration priorities:
Business and Finance
Healthcare
Sales and Service
Trades and Transport
Manufacturing
Within these categories, 25 priority occupations have been highlighted—ranging from cybersecurity specialists and financial analysts to nurses, automotive service technicians, and welders. These roles reflect local employer demands and the need to support economic growth and community sustainability across the region.
By leveraging the RCIP, Pictou County is opening the door for international candidates with relevant skills and experience to build a future in Nova Scotia. In return, the initiative offers smaller communities the opportunity to counter population decline, fill labour shortages, and enhance economic resilience.
The RCIP complements existing federal and provincial immigration streams but is community-driven, allowing local governments and employers to play a central role in candidate selection and integration.
