SASKATCHEWAN ISSUED NEW NOMINATIONS FOR CAPPED SECTORS
Saskatchewan Opens Second 2026 Intake for Capped Sectors
On March 2, 2026, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) launched its second application window of the year for industries under strict nomination caps. This intake follows a redesigned 2026 policy framework that prioritizes workers at high risk of losing their legal status in Canada. While demand remains exceptionally high, the trucking sector currently offers a rare remaining window for employers to secure nominations before the next scheduled intake in May.
Breakdown of the March 2 Intake Window
The second intake window opened with a total of 400 positions across three high-demand sectors—a 100-position increase from the initial January intake. The results from the first day of the window show a stark contrast in how quickly these quotas are being exhausted.
In the Accommodation and Food Services sector, the 240 allocated positions were filled almost instantly upon the portal opening. Similarly, the Retail Trade sector reached its 80-position limit on day one, as prepared applicants rushed to secure their spots.
In contrast, the Trucking sector still presents a vital opportunity for employers. Of the 80 original positions allocated for this round, 40 spots remain available as of early March.
A critical eligibility rule for 2026 remains in effect: only foreign workers with six months or less remaining on their current valid Canadian work permit were eligible to submit applications. This "triage" measure ensures that nomination spaces are reserved for those with the most urgent need to stabilize their status.
Navigating the New Quota System
The 2026 SINP redesign has fundamentally changed how employers and workers must approach the program. Unlike "Priority Sectors"—such as Healthcare, Agriculture, and Tech—which enjoy continuous year-round intake without permit-expiry restrictions, the "Capped Sectors" are strictly managed through these periodic windows.
The "six-month rule" is the most significant strategic pivot of the year. By accepting only those near the end of their permit, Saskatchewan is prioritizing workers who face an immediate risk of having to leave the country. For employers, this means that preparation is no longer optional; it is a necessity. Job Approval Forms (JAF) must be fully prepared and ready for submission the moment a window opens. If an employer misses a window or if a candidate has more than six months left on their permit, the application will not be accepted and must wait for a future intake date.
Plan for the Remaining 2026 Windows
With 40 trucking spots still open, employers in the transportation industry should act immediately to submit their Job Approval Forms. For those in Hospitality or Retail who did not secure a spot this time, the 2026 schedule is fixed, allowing for proactive planning.
