AAIP INTRODUCES $135 WORKER EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FEE EFFECTIVE APRIL 7, 2026

Alberta Implements New $135 Fee for Worker Expressions of Interest

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has officially introduced a new mandatory fee for its initial selection stage. Effective April 7, 2026, all candidates submitting a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI) must pay a non-refundable fee of $135. This move aligns Alberta with other provinces that have shifted toward cost-recovery models for the early stages of the nomination process, ensuring that the pool remains populated with high-intent, qualified applicants.

The New AAIP Fee Structure

While the WEOI fee is a new addition, the rest of the AAIP’s service fees remain at their current levels for the time being:

  • New WEOI Submission Fee: $135 (Effective April 7, 2026).

  • Standard Application Fee: $1,500 (Applies to Alberta Opportunity, Alberta Express Entry, Rural Renewal, and Tourism and Hospitality streams).

  • Entrepreneur Stream Application Fee: $3,500.

  • Additional Service Charges: Fees continue to apply for nomination extensions, letters of support, reconsideration requests, and changes to business performance agreements.

Filtering the Pool for Quality and Intent

The introduction of a $135 fee at the Expression of Interest (EOI) stage is a tactical filter. In previous years, free EOI submissions led to high volumes of low-quality or speculative profiles, which increased processing times for serious candidates. By adding a financial requirement, Alberta is signaling a move toward a more "surgical" selection process.

For our clients at Global Opportunities, this change emphasizes the need for "First-Time Accuracy." Since the $135 fee is non-refundable, submitting a profile with errors or one that doesn't meet the current labor market priorities is now a financial loss. Furthermore, with the AAIP recently tightening its data requirements (including mandatory wage and hour details), the cost of a "guess-and-check" approach has risen. Success in Alberta in 2026 now requires a meticulously prepared profile that is ready for an immediate Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Professional Audits are Now a Financial Asset

As Alberta's immigration system becomes more pay-to-play at every stage, the value of professional representation increases.
