ALBERTA RECEIVES 200 ADDITIONAL PROVINCIAL NOMINATION SPACES FOR 2026

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) has received a federal top-up of 200 additional nomination spaces for 2026, raising the province's total allocation for the year to 6,603 — up from the 6,403 originally set in January. Here's what changed, and a brief look at how the AAIP works if you're weighing Alberta as a path to Canadian permanent residence.

What Is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program?

The AAIP is Alberta's provincial nominee program, operated jointly with the federal government through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It lets Alberta nominate skilled workers, international graduates, and entrepreneurs who match the province's labour market needs for Canadian permanent residence. A provincial nomination through an Express Entry-aligned stream adds 600 points to a candidate's federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which effectively guarantees an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the next federal Express Entry round.

The AAIP runs several distinct streams for workers, plus a separate set of streams for entrepreneurs:

Worker Streams and Job Offer Requirements

Alberta Opportunity Stream — the program's largest and highest-volume stream by far, for temporary foreign workers already living and working in Alberta. This stream requires a full-time, permanent, non-seasonal job offer from the same Alberta employer the candidate has worked for continuously for at least 12 months.

Rural Renewal Stream — for workers with a qualifying job offer in one of Alberta's designated rural communities, aimed at supporting economic growth outside the province's major cities.

Tourism and Hospitality Stream — also requires a valid, full-time Alberta job offer, targeting occupations specific to the tourism and hospitality sector.

Alberta Express Entry Stream — the exception to the job offer rule. This stream selects candidates directly from the federal Express Entry pool based on occupation and provincial priority, and does not require a job offer to be eligible — though having one can still strengthen a candidate's profile.

Entrepreneur streams — rather than a job offer, these require a business plan, investment capital, and in some cases a community or agency endorsement.

What Changed

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed the increase directly to Alberta, which announced the change on its official AAIP Updates page. The extra 200 spaces have been distributed across the program's priority streams, with allocations adjusted stream-by-stream to reflect the change.

The Alberta Opportunity Stream — by far the program's most in-demand pathway — received the largest share of the additional spaces, while a smaller number of streams, including law enforcement and entrepreneur pathways, saw their allocations reduced slightly as part of the redistribution.

Why This Matters

Demand for AAIP nomination continues to significantly outweigh supply. As of the province's most recent update, tens of thousands of Worker Expressions of Interest (WEOIs) remain in the AAIP's inventory, with well over half of those submitted under the Alberta Opportunity Stream alone. The additional 200 spaces won't close that gap, but they do mean more candidates already contributing to Alberta's economy will have a path to nomination this year than originally planned.

This increase is separate from Alberta's additional federal allocation for practice-ready physicians and Francophone candidates — a distinct pool of up to 10,000 spaces shared across all provinces' nominee programs, which does not count against the AAIP's core 6,603 allocation.
