CANADIAN GOVERNMENT INCREASES MINIMUM INCOME REQUIREMENTS FOR SUPER VISA SPONSORS
Effective July 29, 2025, the Government of Canada has implemented a 3.9% increase to the minimum income thresholds for citizens and permanent residents who wish to sponsor parents or grandparents under the Super Visa program. This adjustment reflects updated Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) figures used to determine financial eligibility for sponsorship.
Under the new guidelines, sponsors must meet higher income levels based on their total family size, which now includes dependent children, previously sponsored individuals, and current Super Visa holders. The updated income thresholds start at $30,526 for a single-person household and rise to $80,784 for a family of seven. These figures ensure that sponsors have sufficient financial means to support their relatives during extended stays in Canada.
The Super Visa allows eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Canada for up to five years per visit, making it one of the most flexible and generous family reunification programs in the world. However, sponsors must meet strict financial criteria to be approved.
This recent increase emphasizes the importance of accurate financial planning when preparing a Super Visa application.
