SUPER VISA FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS

Currently, more and more people have decided to immigrate to Canada which is an amazing new journey but also can come with the sensation of homesickness from time-to-time, especially if you hadn’t visited your home country for a long time. Most likely, you miss something and some very special people, your parents and/or grandparents who are an important part of your family and sometimes in need to be with you for extended periods of time which can be a complex thing if they only have a tourist visa.

In this case, the Super visa allows Permanent Residents and Canadian Citizens to provide their parents and/or grandparents a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years, allowing them to stay in Canada for up to 2 years at a time.

Non-the-less if your parents or grandparents are visiting you for less than 6 months and not as often you can always apply for a regular visitor visa in case, they need one or an eTA.

It all sounds great, isn’t it? A period up to 10 years is good for those needing to be in Canada for extended periods of time or who are also waiting to be sponsored since we know that many parents and grandparents are left out each year for the sponsorship application.

Let’s check the eligibility requirements. To be eligible for a super visa, you must:

  • be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada

  • have a signed letter from your child or grandchild who invites you to Canada that includes:

o   a promise of financial support for the length of your visit

o   the list and number of people in the household of this person

o   a copy of this person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

  • have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is:

o   valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry

o   at least $100,000 coverage

o   have proof that the medical insurance has been paid (quotes aren’t accepted)

You must also:

  • apply for a super visa from outside Canada

  • be allowed to enter Canada

  • take an immigration medical exam

  • meet certain other conditions

  • You can’t include dependants in this application.

The child or grandchild who invites you must prove that their household meets the minimum necessary income.

This table applies to you if you live in any province except Quebec. If you live in Quebec, the Quebec ministry in charge of immigration will assess your income.
